Alcoholism, addiction and drug abuse are devastating and heartbreaking for individuals and their families and can create chaos in communities. And addiction is a huge problem in the U.S., as more than 23 million people require treatment for drug or alcohol abuse, according to the most recent government statistics. But so few people actually seek treatment, and even fewer stick with it. That’s why we were excited to learn about a product being launched by SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Their staff of researchers, doctors, social works, therapists and others have developed a library of text messages aimed at helping keep people in recovery on track by providing motivation and inspiration to continue their work in recovery. The messages can be tailored to each individual and would be set up by their therapist or doctor. Addiction can wreck lives, but recovery can save them, as long as people have support along the way.
